Subject outline
In this subject the scope and limits of public interest lawyering are explored. The historical and ideological origins of the concept, public interest law, are studied. A theoretical framework for critical analysis of public interest law practice is developed. Practical and ethical issues, including standing and costs, are addressed. A comparitive approach to the methods and techniques of public interest law is developed based on Australian and international experience and applied to aspects of pro bono practice, law reform activities, public interest law firms, specialist community legal centres, legal aid organisations, government agencies and other forms of public interest lawyering.
