Subject outline

Journalists do not operate in a vacuum. They perform their work for media companies which are trying to survive or at least reinvent themselves in an era of dramatic change. Commerical and other influences impact on what stories are covered, how they are covered and how much prominence they receive. Specific areas students will cover include: role and history of sport media, the role of the media in enhancing the value of sport sponsorship; the links between sports and nationalism; gender issues; the coverage of drugs in sport and ethics in sport media. Students will also examine the cultural side of the sport media, including the cultural status of sport stars.

Graduate capabilities & intended learning outcomes

01. The ability to write and potentially publish articles (400 words), that conform to Australian journalistic standards, on a variety of issues in sport that go beyond previews and results. The ability to revise and sub edit those articles. To look at an issue from all angles whilst acknowledging the influence of their own preconceptions.

Activities:
Students will write various news reports and analysis pieces based on weekly debates to be held in class during the semester.

02. To critically evaluate information presented to the journalist as 'news' and demonstrate an ability to classify that information as worthy of publication in the form of a debate argument.

Activities:
In the course of researching for their debate, students will come across a variety of information sources. They will have to distinguish between accurate and independent material and material put into the public space by organisations with an agenda.

03. To demonstrate an understanding of and ability to make ethical judgments 'on the run' in sport journalism.

Activities:
Students will be given some ethical dilemma scenarios and asked a series of questions online about the course of action they would take and why.

04. Work in a team environment. Demonstrate an ability to come to a consensus on a philosophical position relating to a sport media issue. Be able to articulate and express a point of view to an audience.

Students will participate in debates (in teams) that will discuss various issues relating to sport and media.
