Subject outline

In this subject, students will further develop their health information practice knowledge and skills through engagement in supervised professional practice placements in healthcare and related agencies across the whole-of-health. The purpose of the subject is to enable students to apply theoretical knowledge to practice, and to consolidate learnings from previous professional practice placements. Students will undertake 45 days of placement and complete a range of academic assessments. Regular contact with University supervisors is maintained during placements via telephone, email and on-site visits.

Graduate capabilities & intended learning outcomes

01. Develop further skills in the practice of health information management through supervised engagement in activities which build upon academic studies and previous placement and experiences.

Activities:
Completion of supervised placement activities.

02. Demonstrate an in-depth understanding of health information at agency level, and its collection and applications for clinical and other purposes.

Activities:
Written and oral report.

03. Reflect critically on current theory and practice, displaying intellectual curiosity, creativity and critical thinking skills and comparing processes across health care agencies translating knowledge into new contexts.

Activities:
Written investigative report, contribution to on-line discussions and completion of a conference report.

04. Apply skills in project and time management including development and achievement of objectives, demonstrating the ability to work independently, displaying responsibility and initiative in work practice.

Activities:
Documentation in placement journal, including development of objectives and evidence of placement-related project planning and execution.

05. Apply skills in the extraction and analysis of health data (including the allocation of ICD-10-AM codes according to state and national protocols.)

Completion of supervised placement activities.

06. Work effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment, communicating effectively with a range of people in a variety of settings, using appropriate communication media.

07. Maintain high professional ethical standards and demonstrate awareness of the social and ethical implications of professional and personal activities.

Demonstrated to placement supervisor.

08. Demonstrate a reflective approach to professional development and a commitment to life-long learning.

Completion of a placement journal and a reflective practice assignment. Post placement de-briefing interview with academic staff member.
