Subject outline
Students are provided with an insight into the host-community relationships in the tourism setting, as well as consideration of both the benefits and challenges of cultural interactions arising from tourism. The unit explores such benefits as the revival of local customs and traditions, demand for local products, and the preservation and restoration of historic landscapes and structures. Challenges can include the degradation of local cultures through commercialisation and bogus authenticity, enforced segregation and opposition to tourism initiatives. A range of Australian and international case studies support the theoretical framework.
