Subject outline
We are all living in cities now - or so it seems. This subject looks at cities as material cultures (urbanisation); mediated experiences in everyday life (urbanity); and sites of culture creativity and place-making (urbanism). Module one (urbanisation) looks at cities and civilisations across world-history with particular focus on cultural and technological creativity in city building across civilisations; and modern cities and globalisation: what is the 21st century world-city system order? Module Two (urbanity) looks at urban dwellers and networkers: how do we experience the contemporary city? How is our experience of cities mediated by technologies in everyday life? Module Three (urbanism) looks at culture and place making across social inequalities, centres and margins, space and place, the private and the public. Particular attention is paid to the relationship of urban sub-cultures as networks and status groups, and the kinds of spaces and places they create, occupy and use.
