Subject outline

The subject offers an overview of the Islamic religion with an emphasis upon its spiritual rather than political and social forms. We will consider Islam as a method of gnosis and "remembrance" (dhikr) and will look at spiritual practices such as prayer, fasting and pilgrimage, along with the Sufi and Irfanic spiritual traditions in Sunni and in Shiite Islam.
