Subject outline

In the Counselling Skills component the objective is to teach a theoretical framework for conducting therapy sessions, and enable candidates to learn the basic counselling skills necessary for therapeutic interactions. The model of Egan is used as the basis of the course. The model includes establishing rapport through the use of listening and empathy, helping clients develop new perspectives, challenging, developing preferred scenarios, setting goals, formulating strategies and action plans, and helping clients implement programs. Over the weeks, candidates are required to read assigned chapters, do assigned partner exercises demonstrating key points, practise videotaping their work, and write journal reports on what they have learned from the homework. In the Professional Issues series various ethics and professional topics essential for professional psychologists are addressed in five seminar classes.
