Subject outline

This unit presents the basic principles by which the physical properties of minerals are described and quantified. Topics to be covered include: crystal structures; bonding in solids; electrical, magnetic and optical properties; experimental techniques. The practical component of the subject will provide students with hands-on experience with the following experimental methods: polarizing light microscopy, x-ray diffraction (XRD), electron diffraction (ED), energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS).
