Subject outline

In this subject we seek to acquaint students with the work of some of the most influential European philosophers, and pay particular attention to Martin Heidegger's influential book, Being and Time. Students explore his novel accounts of "being-in-the-world", "the ready-to hand", "throwness", "Angst" and the centrality of mood. Other philosophers to be considered include the French existentialists, Jean-Paul Sartre and Maurice Merleau-Ponty, and throughout the subject philosophical analyses will be related to contemporary findings in cognitive science and other associated disciplines.
