Subject outline
This subject looks at the therapist/client relationship in a broader perspective. Modern and postmodern theoretical approaches will be considered. The literature around common factors in successful therapy will also be introduced. This subject has three main streams: the ongoing study and contextual application of counselling microskills, an exploration of the links between various theories of counselling, and the facilitation of an awareness of the centrality of the therapeutic relationship. The idea of the 'self as counsellor' will also be explored. The importance of self-care will be emphasised.
