Subject outline

In this subject students will develop knowledge of safe and ethical practice in medication administration. The students are introduced to the general principles of Quality Use of Medications and pharmacology including how drugs are prescribed, administered, act in the body, and how the body affects drugs. Commonly used drug groups will be discussed and linked with appropriate pathophysiology. Information will be provided to the students on pharmacologic, pharmacokinetic, and pharmacodynamic principles essential for clinical practice. Emphasis will be placed on the role responsibilities of Registered Nurses for medication administration. Aspects of the role include risk management and quality assurance, delegation and supervision, assessment, legislation specific to drug administration and patient education.

Prerequisites Students must be enrolled in one of the following courses: HSBNC, BEBND2, HBNCM, HBNCP, HSBNCW, HBNPGW, BEBN2, HBNPRG, HSBNW, RBNP, HBNP, HBN, HBNM, HBNUP, HBNPRW, RBN, HZNM & HZNMD. For students enrolled in HBN, HBNM, HBNUP, HBNPRW, RBN - Bachelor of Nursing or HZNM or HZNMD-Bachelor of Nursing/Bachelor of Midwifery then must pass HBS1HBA and HBS1HBB.
