Subject outline

The subject will review the international institutions of banking regulation, including the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision, the Financial Stability Board, G20, International Monetary Fund and World Bank and examine how these institutions and the standards they develop affect domestic banking regulation in major economies such as the United States and Australia. The legal status of these standards will be explored, as will the large complex financial institutions that are principally subject to them. The subject will conclude with a consideration of whether and how this emerging system of global financial regulation might be rendered effective in promoting international financial stability, financial competition and customer protection.
