This subject addresses selected issues at the intersection of psychology and criminal law and considers the ways in which social and behavioural researchers have investigated and analysed legal phenomena. The processes of investigating a criminal event, bringing the matter to trial, and decision-making regarding guilt and disposition, are explored from a psychological perspective. Relevant literature regarding eyewitness testimony, interviewing of witnesses, interrogation of suspects, confessions, lie detection, forensic hypnosis, expert testimony, and jury decision-making is utilised. Students who undertake this subject will be encouraged to adopt an interdisciplinary perspective and to become familiar with psychological literature relevant to the selected topics.
