Subject outline
In this subject, students will examine the legal system of the European Community (EC). The EC is the most important pillar of the European Union (EU). In the first part of the subject, students will consider the constitutional, institutional and procedural law of the EC. Topics covered will include the origins and development of European integration; the institutions; the instruments, form and legal basis of EC powers; EC legislation and policy-making; the nature and effect of EC law; the relationship between EC law and national law and, general principles of EC law. In the second part of the subject, students will consider the substantive law of the EC. Topics covered will include the 'four freedoms' guaranteed by the EC Treaty and on which the common market is based: the free movement of goods, free movement of workers, freedom of establishment and to provide services, and free movement of capital.
