Subject outline

In this subject students are introduced to selected examples of Greek poetry and short fiction written in the twentieth century and develop techniques for their interpretation and analysis. The selections represent the major thematic preoccupations of Greek writers during this period and their connection with historical, political and social developments is explored, as are the characteristics of the different genres and styles of writing. Texts studied include poetry by Cavafy, Varnalis, Seferis, Ritsos, Elytis and Charalambides and prose by Chatzis, Milliex, Samarakis, Vasilikos, Ioannou, Philippou-Pierides and Zafiriou.
