Subject outline

This subject is designed as an introduction to the concepts, theories and applications of finance. The subject begins with an examination of the role of the financial sector within the economy at large. Students are introduced to the equity, debt, futures, swap and option markets. The mechanics of each market are examined and the characteristics of the instruments traded in each market are defined. Students are also introduced to the concepts of risk and return and their application to portfolio theory and asset pricing models. The subject concludes with an introduction to financial management, including capital budgeting and project evaluation.
