Subject outline

It's a common misconception that autobiographies are simple facsimiles of real lives. In this subject, we explore autobiography as something more artful, complicated and powerful. We'll investigate autobiography as a performance, the ways the construction and publishing of autobiographical narrative shape, reify or constrain identity, the role of readers and anticipated readers in governing identity. We'lll investigate a range of texts from the eighteenth to twentieth centuries in their cultural contexts and consider the "other" autobiographies, the ways we daily construct and broadcast our histories and selves.
