his unit aims to introduce students to a broad range of texts, both in poetry and prose, from the Romantic period. Focusing on writers as diverse as Charlotte Smith, William Wordsworth, Jane Austen and Lord Byron, this unit will explore such topics as: the rise of the novel; the influence of the gothic on romantic literature; Romantic celebrity culture; and the impact exerted on the literature of this period by the discourses of sensibility and the sublime. Students completing this unit will have developed an understanding of a number of key romantic texts, and of the contexts out of which these texts arose.
