This subject will examine in depth the following plays: A Midsummer Night's Dream, King Lear, Twelfth Night, Othello and The Tempest. It will consider the plays in relation to a number of issues and approaches, starting with questions of close analysis and interpretation, moving out to historicism versus anti-historicism, new approaches to early modern literature (and literature in general), especially new historicist, feminist, and materialist, and some issues of editing, transmission, transformation, and performance.
