Subject outline
In this subject, students will study a variety of Elizabethan and Jacobean comedies by Shakespeare and other writers, with particular emphasis on the influence of the pastoral in the development of Shakespearean comedy, the impact on Jacobean theatre of city comedy and the emergence of romance drama out of the pastoral tradition. A number of playwrights other than Shakespeare, such as Jonson, Middleton and Dekker, will also be considered as part of the aim of the course is to provide some insight into the workings of Elizabethan and Jacobean comedy. Discussions of the plays will be informed by historicist references to questions of gender and power. Some examples from the works of women playwrights of the period will also be provided.
