The unit focus is on the discipline of telecommunication systems engineering, including system functions, performance and economic aspects. The systems to be studied in this unit include radar systems, navigational aids, satellite communications, global positioning systems and digital microwave radio links. The economic aspects include foundations of engineering economics, system reliability considerations, life cycle costing, depreciation methods, payback period, present worth, annual worth, breakeven analyses and system replacement and retention decisions.
