Subject outline
Students will study the visual style and aural codes of popular film and television genres. They will investigate how these codes engage the audience in the pleasurable repetition of certain kinds of stories, characters and dilemmas. Students will draw on key concepts from genre theory to research a classical Hollywood genre and compare it with a genre such as Japanese anime, Hong Kong martial arts, Korean horror, Bollywoood musical or Latin-American magical realism. Their will focus on how Hollywood and non-Hollywood genres have been taken up in advertising, music videos and other cultural forms.
