Subject outline
Contemporary European Cinema is a subject designed to introduce students to a range of films produced in Europe from the 1960s onwards and the ways in which the national cinema industries of Italy, France, Poland, Czech Republic, Britain and others have contributed to debates about culture, politics, aesthetics, and the historical development of the modernist narrative form. The subject will also look at themes to do with art cinema and popular culture; auteur cinema; and Europe's challenge to the narrative conventions of Hollywood cinema.
