Subject outline

Students will study the visual style and aural codes of popular film and television genres. They will investigate how these codes engage the audience in the pleasurable repetition of certain kinds of stories, characters and dilemmas. Students will use key concepts from genre theory to research a specific genre such as melodrama, comedy, thriller, musical, noir, epic, horror, fantasy, scifi or animation. They will show how genre-specific codes have been taken up and remixed in other media including magazines, photojournalism, advertising, video clips, radio plays and online.
