Subject outline
This subject introduces biocomputing techniques, including the use of computational tools for biological information retrieval, sequence alignment, promoter region recognition and regulatory elements discovery in DNA sequences. Through study of this subject, students will be able to understand the goals and research methodologies for bioinformatics. Fundamentals of programming with Perl and Matlab for manipulating sequences, and automating BLAST queries will be covered. Modelling, filtering and location prediction of transcription factor binding sites will be addressed.
