Subject outline
Structural analysis is an essential component of the design process of civil engineering structures such as buildings and bridges. This unit extends the work of the analysis component of Structures 2, and primarily focuses on elasticity theory as a basis for analysing continuum structures and on the use of finite elements for obtaining approximate solutions. It introduces students to the theoretical underpinnings of standard structural theories, and includes a discussion of dynamics. The unit also introduces the key concepts of the finite element method and how it is implemented and used in practice.
