Subject outline

Are you interested in how the teachings of one man in India two and half thousand years ago developed into one of the world's great religions? In this unit we investigate the Indian origins of Buddhism and trace its development through Indian and Asian history, focusing on its responses to local cultural, political and economic conditions. The philosophical and practical applications of Buddhist doctrines will be examined, and we conclude with a study of Buddhism in the modern world and Buddhism and peace activism and engaged Buddhist environmental movements.
