Subject outline

What is the role of Buddhism in the society and politics of contemporary Asia? The unit will focus on Buddhism in China, Japan, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Thailand and Tibet in order to explore relationships between Buddhism, society and politics and the ways in which diverse Buddhist identities relate to emerging ideas about Buddhism as a global religion. We conclude by examining Western engagement with the philosophical, scientific and psychological aspects of Buddhist traditions. The aim is to foster students' understanding of the diversity of Buddhist cultures and the contemporary impact of Buddhism on politics and society in our region.
