Subject outline

This unit aims to help students achieve a basic level of understanding of psychopathology, the DSM-IV diagnostic classification system, skills in conducting Mental Status Examinations and diagnostic interviewing, and basic competence in making psychiatric diagnoses. Three seminars introduce concepts of classification in psychopathology, the ICD and DSM-IV systems, approaches to Mental Status Examinations and an introduction to the CIDI, a computerised diagnostic interview. The remaining classes usually consist of a lecture outlining a major adult psychiatric disorder followed by a discussion with a guest client who has a relevant disorder. Some of these seminars may be conducted at psychiatric services in the northern suburbs of Melbourne and some on campus.
