Subject outline

This subject is designed to identify, outline and discuss the key issues, actors and processes in the international politics of the Greater Middle East - a term that, for the purposes of this subject, indicates the region extending from Morocco to the Afghanistan-Pakistan border. A strongly comparative focus underpins the unit, which will devote its core attention to the transnational nature of the international politics of the region. Students will be presented with and stimulated to reflect upon in-depth descriptions of the region's key processes (radical Islam, the advancement of authoritarian politics, nuclear proliferation, energy and the politics of natural resources more in general), major conflicts (Israel/Palestine, Afghanistan, Tajikistan), and with a detailed analysis of the interaction between regional states and the key international actors (United States, China, and Russia) involved in the Greater Middle East political arena.
