Subject outline
On completion of this subject, students will be able to solve problems in classical electromagnetism and modern materials science which provide a basis for further study in physics, engineering or another science. They will use the essential apparatus in a physics laboratory to take and analyse measurements, and master the vocabulary and essential concepts of classical electromagnetism and modern materials science. Students investigate electrostatics, magnetostatics, induction, conductivity, crystal structure and phase. Students will conduct three experimental investigations into electromagnetism and modern materials. Additionally, students individually solve a simple research problem solvable by computational methods. The approach and results of these investigations are summarised in written reports. This subject is available to postgraduate students as part of a group of electives which deepen their knowledge of physics and introduce research-related skills.
