Subject outline
Students are provided with the foundation to equip them with the skills, knowledge base and theoretical frameworks to assess the unique needs of each client and to formulate informed and practical intervention strategies to address client needs. There are three broad streams within this unit: the theoretical and philosophical contexts of assessment; the assessment of conditions which may indicate the potential for harm or danger; and the exploration of a variety of assessment tools and methods. Students are encouraged to consider the ethical and clinical issues of using diagnostic categories in their work as counsellors. This subject is also seen as vital in the lead up to the Internship subject in the third semester.
