Subject outline
Gods, monsters, sex and desire introduces students to ancient Greek representations of the human form using 100 ancient artworks from the British Museum's Greek and Roman collection at the Bendigo Art Gallery. Students will be introduced to ancient Greek culture and history from prehistory to the age of Alexander the Great, and will focus on the development of Greek artistic technique, monsters, sex and desire, heroes, athletes, gender, the gods and everyday life in ancient Greece. From the abstract representation of the human form to the ideal representation of physical beauty this subect will teach students to contextualise and critique artistic objects. Upon completion students will have gained a strong understanding of how the ancient Greek representation of the human form influences how we think about humanity and the human form today. This subject will be taught in block mode in Bendigo so students have the opportunity to get up close and personal with the collection.
