Subject outline
In this subject, conceptual tools drawn from the social sciences are used to identify and explore the varied ways in which law and legal knowledge contributes to the investigation of social problems and the resolution of disputes. Students learn about how the law works in theory and in practice. Basic legal concepts and skills relating to law making, judicial process, legal research and the ethical dimensions of practising law are considered. Through activities including court visits and fieldwork, students will learn how to identify and analyse how legal knowledge and practices are applied in different practical contexts, including courts and tribunals, law firms, community legal centres and community organisations. The subject has a strong vocational focus, with a range of practitioners and professionals offering insights into how legal studies skills relate to their work.
