Subject outline

This unit will teach (a) the operation of the US securities regime and (b) the operation of the Australian securities and futures markets under the Corporations Law, the rules of the relevant exchanges and the oversight of the Australian Securities and Investments Commission. Comparisons are made with the conditions for listing and trading on overseas markets, especially in South-East Asia. Students will consider the effect of technology and globalisation in creating an environment for market liberalisation and regulatory competition. Considering issues like investor protection and national economic stability, the unit evaluates the moves towards coordination of regulation, for example through networks of national regulators like the International Organisation of Securities Commissions.
