Subject outline

This subject will introduce students to the concepts and categories of European intellectual property that have attracted international recognition, such as patents, copyrights and trade marks. Students are acquainted with the standards set for national protection in such international conventions as the WTO TRIPs agreement, the 1996 WIPO Copyright Treaties, the Berne Convention, the Paris Convention and the Patent Co-operation Treaty. Examining the European law they appreciate how national differences continue to influence the application and enforcement of European intellectual property in such crucial fields as biotechnology, information technology, pharmaceuticals and internationally well-known marks.
