ABORIGINAL AUSTRALIAN HISTORY: THE COLONIAL WORLD
HIS2AAH
2014
Credit points: 15
Subject outline
This subject examines the histories that Aboriginal Australians made following British colonization. It offers students an overview of the long colonial relationship between Australian settlers and Aboriginal peoples, from violence and friendship on rural and urban frontiers, to museums, missions and contemporary unease over the meaning of 'Aboriginality' in Australian national identity. Subject material introduces students to the independent interactions of Aboriginal peoples across the South, as well as the controversial concepts of 'discovery' and 'first contact'. Students will trace the increasingly international reach of Aboriginal agency, resistance and political activism from the 1840s onwards.
