2014

Credit points: 15

Subject outline

This subject will introduce students to the events and issues that shaped Australia during the years from British convict settlement of the first colony, New South Wales, to the union of colonies with Federation in 1901. We will investigate the treatment of convicts and Aborigines, the spread of European settlement, goldrushes and bushrangers, the evolution of colonial government, the role of women in colonial Australia, and questions about developing Australian identities. Readings, tutorial discussions, assignments and lectures will provide students with skills in reading and using primary and secondary sources, assessing evidence, and constructing a convincing argument.
