Subject outline
This subject is designed for students who already have some acquaintance with Jane Austen's work. We will study Austen's major novels, and key minor works, with a view to understanding where they came from, and why they have drawn unusually strong and impassioned responses from readers over the past 200 years. We will also explore Austen's relation to her literary precursors and consider the meaning of recent appropriations of her work in a variety of media.
