Subject outline
In this subject we will focus on American poetry and fiction in the latter half of the twentieth century and into the twenty-first century. During this period American writers frequently explored questions of identity in relation to processes of national identity formation. The selected texts explore subjects and themes that challenges some of the most potent and long-cherished myths of the American dream. These include: the counterhistories of African Americans, women and minorities, the unchecked growth of mass consumerism, the global catastrophe of a world war, and nuclear proliferation.
