Subject outline

In this subject students focus on the emergence of new kinds of writings in the United States from the early decades of the century through to its close, with particular reference to modernist and postmodernist fiction. We will consider the kinds of challenges that have been made to conventional narrative and linguistic forms during the period under study, examining the effects of contestations over notions of truth, history, and memory. In particular we will explore the relations between Europe and the United States..
