Subject outline
The person-centred approach is a body of theory and associated methodologies centred on the work of Carl Rogers. Students examines this theory; its sources in phenomenology, perceptual psychology and clinical practice; significant research undertaken within the framework; the relationship of the person-centred approach to social, cultural and political contexts; the development of the notion of the helping relationship and the notion of dialogue; the de-professionalisation of counselling; and the implications of person-centred theory for practice in a variety of helping occupations. Students also attend workshops to develop counselling skills consistent with the person-centred approach.
