Subject outline
This subject asks: Why did Plato want to ban theatre from his ideal state? Why were actors refused burial in Christian Churchyards? The history of theatre and its theory is one of controversy, outrage and scandal not to mention madness over 2,000 years. A survey of these controversies in historical and recent writings about theatres and their impact on audiences. A wide range of dramatic theories, playwrights and performers are introduced for analysis to emcompass: Aristotle and Rousseau and their theories of audience reception; Artuaud and Grotowski and theatres of ritual; and gender and postcolonial theory.
