Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE)

A Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) is an official document issued to international students, and is essential for applying for a student visa to study in Australia. It provides key details about your enrolment status to the Department of Home Affairs.

  • Your CoE should accurately reflect your course enrolment, including proposed course start and end dates, fees paid and total fees required.
  • You must always have a valid CoE while studying on a student visa in Australia. If your CoE is cancelled, your visa may also be cancelled by the Department of Home Affairs.

  • You will receive your CoE after accepting your offer and paying the necessary fees.
  • Your CoE should accurately reflect your course enrolment, including course duration (start and end dates), fees paid and total fees required for the course. It will also indicate your status whether ‘approved’, ‘visa granted’ or ‘studying’.

  • If you require a new CoE, lodge your application at least 7 working days before you need it. La Trobe cannot issue a CoE at the last minute or if you have outstanding fees to the University.
  • You must lodge your visa application before the course start date on the CoE. The online visa application system will not allow you to lodge the application after this date.

Circumstances for CoE cancellation

If your CoE is cancelled, the University is required to report the reason for the cancellation to the Department of Home Affairs (DHA), and this may result in the cancellation of your student visa. Any enquiry about your visa status should be directed to the DHA.

Understanding the compliance reporting cycle and its implications is important for all international students on a student visa. La Trobe University is required to cancel your CoE in certain situations, including:

  • Academic progress
  • Discontinuation
  • Early completion
  • Exceeding maximum course duration
  • External Study Mode (HDR Students)
  • Inactive enrolment
  • Leave of Absence
  • Misconduct
  • Non-commencement
  • Non-payment of fees

Find out more about what each of these reasons means below.

  • Academic progress: If you are discontinued by the University for unsatisfactory academic progress.
  • Discontinuation: If you commence your course but choose to discontinue your studies before completion.
  • Early completion: If you complete all course requirements more than one month before the Proposed Course End Date on the Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE), your CoE will be reported for early completion and updated to "finished". If you stay in Australia more than three months after your early completion, you will need to obtain a new CoE or apply for another visa to remain lawfully in Australia. If you depart Australia, please request to cancel your student visa through ImmiAccount to avoid a non-voluntary visa cancellation on your Australian immigration history. If your CoE is cancelled due to early completion, you will receive an email notification with a link to the Department of Home Affairs with further information.
  • Exceeding maximum course duration: If you have exceeded the time frames prescribed in your (CoE) for completing your course, or if your course has a specified Maximum Period of Study.
  • External Study Mode (HDR Students): If your enrolment mode changes to ‘external’ candidature.
  • Inactive enrolment: If you fail to re-enrol in your course (or withdraw from your subjects) and your enrolment status becomes inactive.
  • Leave of Absence: If you are granted a formal break from your studies (a new CoE will be issued for your returning study period).
  • Misconduct: If you are discontinued by the University for academic or general misconduct.
  • Non-commencement: If you fail to commence your course within the commencement period.
  • Non-payment of fees: If you are discontinued by the University for non-payment of fees.
