Subject outline

Research Project in Psychology A is a capstone subject, the function of which is to develop entrepreneurial thinking. A topic exemplifying one of the School's research areas is the focus for these activities. Students gain experience in designing a research study, applying for ethics approval and acquiring funding to conduct the study. They develop team-work skills and skills in communicating using contemporary technologies. Relevant themes in psychology are covered, as well as ethical issues relevant to the conduct of scientific research. Practical experience with tasks contributing to assessment activities is provided in tutorials, and themes introduced in project group seminars are expanded in online self-guided learning activities. PSY3RPA addresses La Trobe's Innovation and Entrepreneurship Essential, which includes the capacity to apply theory, locate and synthesize knowledge resources, prioritize action and manage associated risks, as well as the ability to effectively communicate while collaboratively and creatively resolving complex social problems.

01. Analyse and evaluate empirical research by identifying, collecting, organising, and reviewing appropriate literature.
02. Work effectively as a team to solve problems creatively and test hypotheses drawn from an analysis in a research area.
03. Apply requirements for the ethical use of information in the design and conduct of research, particularly as this relates to solving complex social or psychological problems.
04. Locate appropriate sources of funding for research that could be used to support entrepreneurial research activities.
05. Be familiar with a wide range of research methodologies and be able to apply this knowledge to investigate psychological issues empirically.
06. Demonstrate awareness of cultural differences and show sensitivity to the diversity across people, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, when applying knowledge and skills of psychology.
