In this subject, students will develop fundamental knowledge and skills required to care for women and their babies, to six weeks post-birth, in the midwifery care context. The subject includes a variety of normal and complex physiological, psychological and social adaptations occurring for new mothers and their families in the first six weeks postpartum. Students will learn about the role of the midwife in providing postnatal care, infant feeding, promotion and establishment of breastfeeding and the provision of education and support to empower women and their families during this period to make evidence based informed choices. This subject is delivered via a blended learning approach comprising of face to face teaching, workshops and online learning modules and is supported by clinical practicum.
