Subject outline

In this subject we explore the ever-shifting terrain of 21st century work. From big data and artificial intelligence, to the gig economy and the work-life collision, the nature and experience of work is changing rapidly. These wide-ranging socio-economic, cultural and technological changes have sparked debate about what we want the future of work to look like: Should we introduce universal basic income? Are there some jobs we shouldn't allow machines to do? In this subject we consider these questions about the future of work, investigate the current state of work, and look back to better understand the shift from industrial capitalism to a post-industrial society. We also reflect on the idea of vocation, the relationship between work and self-identity, and navigating careers in an era when work pathways are less linear and more 'flexible'.
