Subject outline

This subject extends to your understanding of the concepts underlying health information management. You are introduced to digital health and health informatics with a focus on both administrative and clinical information systems, including system specification issues and technical considerations for electronic health information systems. Case studies and enquiries are used to apply critical theories to applications. There is an introduction to protocol-based and clinical-decision support systems. Discussions, research and student presentations enable students to create a model for designing information systems to support the provision of quality care.

01. Describe and explain the key elements of computer-based information systems and basic concepts of health informatics and digital health, as applied in the effective management of health information.

02. Apply the scope and functions of systems for the capture, use, and reporting of health administrative information applied to support the operations and obligations of the business, and patient/client care.

03. Apply the scope and functions of systems for the capture, use, and reporting of clinical information applied to support patient/client care, and business operational requirements.

04. Demonstrate understanding of the purposes and applications of protocol-based information systems in healthcare to support clinical decision-making and patient care.

05. Use contemporary policy, reports and other sources to build an understanding of the most recent developments in eHealth governance, standards and applications, including for personally-held electronic health records.
