Subject outline

This subject is designed to establish a knowledge and skill base for pre-service teachers in the areas of curriculum, pedagogy, planning, assessment and reporting in Outdoor Education for secondary students in the junior and middle years of secondary schooling (Years 7-10). The subject is designed to develop pre-service teachers' understanding of contemporary theory, concepts and skills in Outdoor Education teaching as applied in classroom and outdoor contexts. Theoretical concepts, pedagogical principles and state and national curriculum structures within Outdoor Education are examined and applied in the evaluation, design and implementation of learning resources that are responsive to the needs of diverse learners. Strategic advice relating to teaching this discipline includes safety management and legal responsibilities, application of learning technologies and resources.

Intended Learning Outcomes

01. Critically analyse outdoor education theory to develop knowledge of the concepts, substance and structure of the content and teaching strategies to enhance student learning. Articulate a professional position on pedagogy in this field.
02. Plan and synthesise a range of Outdoor Education learning and teaching activities and sequences for junior secondary students (7-10). These include a variety of pedagogical approaches and resources (including safe and ethical pedagogy and use of resources including ICT appropriate to state and national curricula.
03. Describe, design and evaluate a sequence of work involving a variety of teaching strategies that cater for individual differences in student learning across the full range of abilities and integrate general capabilities, cross curriculum priorities, literacy and numeracy in Outdoor Education.
04. Examine the relationships between assessment, feedback and reporting, learning task design, student engagement and understanding in Outdoor Education. Apply these relationships to the development and evaluation of sequence plans.
