Subject outline

This subject introduces students to a spectrum of statistical thinking and skills required for future learning in general university programs. Students will develop conceptual knowledge and procedural skills in statistical analysis. Students will develop skills in Excel use sufficient to manage and analyse simple data sets. Assessments tasks are based on cumulative development of skills and include online quizzes and a project task.

Intended Learning Outcomes

01. Demonstrate understanding of statistics as a mathematical framework to research, understand, and make predictions about the real world, and develop basic skills in data collection
02. Identify the ways that statistical analysis and skills are employed to describe data and use the data to make observations and predictions about the population from which the data was drawn.
03. Conduct basic statistical analysis of data using spreadsheet programs (such as Excel)
04. Develop Excel graphs, transfer these graphs to other applications (such as Word and generate reports on these findings
